How to Change a Euro Cylinder Lock

Installing or replacing a euro cylinder lock may seem like a daunting task for some DIYers, but it is actually a very simple job that can be completed without any specialist tools, equipment, or knowledge of the inner workings of locks! The lock itself can be slipped out of the door and a new one can be fitted without even having to remove the door handle. In the steps below we will outline how this process is done.

HOW TO REMOVE A EURO CYLINDER LOCK

1. To remove a euro cylinder lock, the only tool you will need is a screwdriver that fits the lock retaining screw in the door, you should also have your door key handy.
2. To start, open the door and observe the cross section of the locking mechanism. From here you will need to find the lock retaining screw, which is located slightly below the level of the keyhole when viewing the door’s cross section.
3. Use your screwdriver to remove this screw, which will loosen the lock.
4. With your key in the lock now, you may find that you are unable to pull the lock out straight away. This is because the cam tongue of the lock is likely not aligned with the main body. In order to remove the lock from its slot, you will need to turn it slightly either clockwise or counter clockwise so that the cam tongue aligns correctly. If you pull slightly on the lock whilst you are doing this, it should come out of the door.

HOW TO INSTALL A DOOR LOCK CYLINDER

1. Take your new cylinder lock and slot it into the hole from where your old lock was previously removed. If the lock on your door has a different internal and external length when measuring from the retaining screw point, ensure that the lock is going in the right way around. 2. Once the new lock is slid into place so that the screw hole on the door lines up with the hole on the cylinder lock, re-fix the lock screw to secure it in place.

HOW TO REMOVE A EURO CYLINDER LOCK WITHOUT THE KEY

Although the steps listed above require the use of the door key, removing a cylinder lock from a door can actually be done without the use of a key. In order to do this, you will still need a screwdriver however you will also need a pair of mole grips.

1. Open the door and use your screwdriver to remove any screws that are securing the door handle cover to the door.
2. Remove the door handle cover from the door and locate the euro cylinder lock.
3. Take your mole grips and use them to grip around the top and bottom of the lock, tightening them as much as possible.
4. Give the lock a push whilst moving it up and down using the mole grips and it will eventually break in half, with half of it in the grips and the other half will have fallen out from the other side of the door.
