Often confused with coach bolts that fasten with a nut, a coach screw is a hexagonal headed (hex) heavy-duty woodscrew that screws straight into wood or masonry. Their primary use is generally to fasten heavy timber into position, for example when installing gates and fences.

Using Coach Screws

When drilling into wood a drilling a pilot hole is required to prevent splitting. In softwoods the diameter of the pilot hole should be half the diameter of the fixing, i.e. drill a 4mm hole for an 8mm coach screw.

When working with hardwoods, the pilot hole should be ¾ of the size of the fixing.

When fastening to masonry using a coach screw a nylon wall plug is needed.
Our coach screws are available in Bright Zinc Plated (BZP) and A2 Stainless Steel finishes.

A BZP or bright zinc plated fastener is one which has a thin coating of zinc added during production. This protective coating adds durability by protecting the product against rust or oxidisation.
